Optimal Allocation of Highway Maintenance Resources Based on Genetic Algorithms

  • To gain in highway maintenance strategies when resources are allocated optimally,a genetic algorithm(GA) is proposed.The multi-year maintenance strategy is regarded as chromosome,and each maintenance alternative is encoded as two genes i.e.,as 0 and 1.In the chromosome,each year's maintenance strategy composed of pavements and bridge decks,and parameters of GA are estimated via experiments.To utilize maintenance resources efficiently,after pavement and bridge deck resources optimally allocated respectively,sharing of maintenance resources between the two facilities is realized using GA.Results of numerical example showed that the average condition of pavement and bridge rose 1.8% and 0.4% respectively using the method of GA for resources allocation.
