Numerical Simulation of Aircraft Overrun Arresting System’s Arresting Behavior

  • Engineered material arresting system (EMAS) is the specified equipment used to prevent aircraft from overrunning. Firstly, based on static compression and impact tests of the arresting material (i.e. the foamed concrete), constitutive model and its parameters of the foamed concrete in the FEM simulation were determined. Then numerical simulations were performed on several federal aviation administration (FAA) aircraft arresting tests. The simplification of aircraft arresting FEM model and corresponding calculation method were verified. Numerical results show that the arresting effects would become stronger with the increase of the thickness and yield strength of the foamed concrete, while it would be weaker after the thickness reaching a critical one.
